The Samundra Institute of Maritime Studies [SIMS], spread over eighty acres of pristine, rive-side land near the hill station of Lonavala in Maharashtra is India’s leading shipping academy. Sponsored by the Executive Ship Management Private Limited (Singapore), the manager of more than fifty ships, the institute aims at being the world leader in pre- and post-sea training, nautical research and knowledge creation. The campus includes a Science Centre, a Nautical Workshop, an Academic Complex, a Catering Centre, Auditorium, Administration Centre, faculty housing, and accommodation for 480 participants. There is a large swimming pool, a football/cricket ground and other athletic facilities. The “ship-in-campus” is a unique real life full scale engine room, deck and cabins, complete with all navigation and engineering equipment. Set in a lake, life saving drills and exercises can be carried out here also.
The architecture is of ship materials
maintaining consonance with work life at sea. Steel and glass create
materials create a maritime ambiance. The landscape is considered like
a green carpet of ocean, rolling gently between the structures. Individual
buildings are treated as sculptural objects floating within this garden
sea.
