Shrine at TBMSG Hostel, Nagpur.

This small shrine in a restricted site in Nagpur is used by students and followers of the Buddhist path. It is a women’s place of meditation and hall for dialogues.

Its shape refers to the famous Sermon of the Turning of the Wheel presented in Sarnath near Varanasi. The fabric of build uses exposed brick walls, and exposed concrete columns and ceilings in which votive symbols are inscribed. The structure is composed of two circles; one is a solid wall and the other is a wall-less open pavilion that sits in the wall leaving a garden space in between that also acts as a “sky court.” This minimalist composition is similar to the square meditation hall, which uses a similar building vocabulary at Nagarlok nearby.
